…Imitation took many forms. In sculpture, there were copies made mechanically, and therefore more faithfully, to the Greek original (the so-called Romantic copies), copies made according to the whims of the copyist or the client (the so-called pasticcio), and works that were not based on any particular original, but instead represented the Greek ideal of gods or deified emperors and queens. The situation was much the same in painting, but Greek paintings were also copied into the mosaic style, which developed greatly in the Roman period. …
