Hetman of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Educated at the Polish court, he was trusted by the Russian Tsar Peter I. In the middle of the Northern War, he betrayed Peter and tried to gain Ukrainian independence, siding with Sweden, but was defeated at the Battle of Poltava and fled to Turkey, where he died.
