An active volcanic island in the southernmost part of the Lipari Islands in southern Italy. It is known for its therapeutic mud and hot springs. The highest point is Mount Aria in the south. Mount Vulcano (500m above sea level) at the northern end is a stratovolcano with a crater diameter of about 500m. It has had explosive eruptions since recorded history, with a major eruption in 1886-1890, and this type of eruption is called a Vulcanian eruption. Approximately 20 km2.
