Youth class - Seinengakkyu

Japanese: 青年学級 - せいねんがっきゅう

These are social education programs run by municipalities for working young people with the aim of improving their general education and acquiring knowledge and skills related to occupations or household chores that are necessary for real life. They are set up in municipal community centers or schools. They began as an independent learning movement run by young people in Yamagata Prefecture after World War II, and were legalized with the passage of the Youth Class Promotion Act (1953). Due to the rising rate of people going on to high school and the progress of urbanization, they peaked in 1955 and then began to decline, and currently exist in the form of youth courses and youth education.

勤労青年を対象に，一般的教養の向上，実際生活に必要な職業または家事に関する知識，技能の習得などを目的として開設される市町村の社会教育事業。開設場所は市町村の公民館や学校と決められている。第2次世界大戦後，山形県の青年による自主的な学習運動として始ったものであり，青年学級振興法 (1953) の成立により法制化された。高校進学率の上昇や都市化の進行の影響を受けて，1955年をピークに衰退に向い，現在は青年講座，青年教育などの形で存続している。
