A book on theater. Written by Banri Teifuko. Published in January 1771 (Meiwa 8) by Kawana Tohachiro and Kikuoka Kichiemon. Five volumes, five books. The preface reads "Three famous plays in a sleeve diary." This book begins with the origins of Edo Kabuki and goes on to criticize the acting styles and techniques of actors, and is said to be the first full-fledged theater book in Edo. Volume 1 is a collection of so-called "theatrical beginnings," such as the origins of Edo theater and the origins of various events, while Volume 2 is so-called "famous actors," such as the family crests, costumes, and famous sayings of famous actors, and explains the origin of the book's title. 演劇書。万里亭夫古工著。1771年(明和8)正月,河名藤八郎,菊岡吉右衛門刊。5巻5冊。序には〈三芝居名物袖日記〉とある。本書は,江戸歌舞伎の起源から説き起こし,役者の芸風,技芸評に及んでおり,江戸における本格的な劇書の嚆矢(こうし)といわれる。内容は,巻一は,江戸芝居の創始,諸行事の起源など,いわゆる〈芝居事始め〉を集成し,巻二は,古名優の定紋,扮装,名言など,いわゆる〈役者名物〉とし,書名の謂(いわれ)を示す。
