Inner Tamagaki

… The oldest style of wooden fence in Japan can be seen around the temples of Ise Grand Shrine. The innermost is a mizugaki made of thick planks lined up closely together, followed by an inner tamagaki made of timber arranged in a fence-like shape, then an outer tamagaki made of logs arranged in a fence-like shape, and finally an itagaki, which is a wooden fence. Mizugaki, made of thick planks with triangular pointed ends arranged closely together, was used at Kasuga Taisha Shrine and is also often depicted in medieval picture scrolls, so it is thought to have been very common in ancient shrines. …
