A device to prevent ice from forming on aircraft during flight (see diagram). When the temperature is between 0 and -20°C and the aircraft passes through clouds containing supercooled water droplets, ice forms on the front of the aircraft where the air hits it, changing the wing shape and increasing resistance, and causing ice fragments to fly into the jet engine, among other problems. There are two types of devices to prevent this: anti-icing systems, which use heat to prevent icing, and de-icing systems, which intermittently remove ice that has formed. 飛行中の航空機に氷が付着するのを防ぐための装置(図)。気温が0~-20℃程度で過冷却状態の水滴のある雲の中を通ったりすると,機体の前面の空気の当たる部分に氷が着き,翼型が変わって抵抗が増したり,ジェットエンジンに氷の破片が飛び込むなど不つごうなことが多い。これを防ぐための装置には加熱で着氷を防ぐ防氷装置anti‐icing systemと,付着した氷を間欠的にはがす除氷装置de‐icing systemの二つがある。
