The capital of the province of the same name in central Thailand. Population 29,502 (1980). 133 km west of Bangkok by rail, on the left bank of the Mae Klong River. Located on the route to Myanmar, it has long been a strategic military point. Nearby is a cemetery for victims of the construction of the Thai-Burma Railway by the Japanese army during World War II. In Pong Thuk to the east, the 6th and 7th century Mon settlement of Dobarabati is well known. To the west, mountainous areas stretch into Myanmar, and the city is a distribution center for tobacco and other field crops, as well as timber, charcoal and other forest products. タイ中部,同名県の県都。人口2万9502(1980)。バンコクから鉄道で133km西方にあり,メークローン川左岸に位置する。ミャンマーへの通路に位置し,古くからの軍事的要衝。近くに,第2次大戦中日本軍がタイ・ビルマ鉄道を建設した際の犠牲者の墓地がある。東方のポントゥックでは,6,7世紀のモン族のドバーラバティの遺跡が著名。西方はミャンマーに続く山地がひろがり,タバコなどの畑作農産物のほか,木材,炭など森林産物の集散地でもある。
