Salsa - Sarusa (English spelling) salsa

American popular dance music of Cuban origin. A hybrid music created in the 1940s based on Afro-Cuban elements such as danzón, which was created by fusing Spanish dance music with West African dance rhythms, guaracha, son, rumba, cha-cha-cha, and mambo. Salsa means "sauce (for cooking)," and as the name suggests, its main characteristic is the mixture of various musical elements.

In the 1950s, many Cuban musicians emigrated to New York, where they adopted the swing jazz style of big bands and developed it into "Latin jazz." Around this time, the standard lineup consisted of a dozen or so musicians, including vocals, percussion (bongos, congas, claves, maracas, guiro, etc.), piano, bass guitar, trumpet, trombone, and saxophone.

Later, in the 1960s and 1970s, it was Puerto Rican immigrants living in New York who developed salsa significantly. They actively incorporated elements of their country's music (the bomba rhythm and the cuatro, a small 10-string guitar) and jazz (harmonies and improvisational solo style). As a result, salsa became a cultural symbol of Puerto Ricans at the time, and also spread to other Latin American countries (Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, etc.).

From the 1980s to the 1990s, a new style of salsa, salsa romantica, was born, fusing Latin ballads with salsa rhythms. Its characteristics are more romantic lyrics, slower tempos, emphasis on melody over rhythm, and frequent use of chord changes, and it has been combined with sensual dancing to produce many hit songs.

Notable salsa performers and singers from the 1950s through the 1990s include pianist Eddie Palmieri (1936- ), percussionist Ray Barretto (1929-2006) and Tito Puente, salsa diva Celia Cruz (1925-2003), trombonist and singer Willie Colón (1950- ), guitarist and singer Rubén Blades (1948- ), and singers José Alberto (1958- ), and Lalo Rodríguez (1958- ).

キューバ起源のアメリカのポピュラー・ダンス音楽。スペインの舞踊音楽と西アフリカの舞踊リズムとが融合してできあがったダンソンdanzón、グアラーチャguaracha、ソンson、ルンバ、チャチャチャ、マンボなどのアフロ・キューバン音楽の要素をもとに、1940年代につくられた混成音楽。サルサとは「（料理用の）ソース」という意味だが、その語義のとおり、さまざまな音楽的要素の混ざり合いを大きな特徴としている。

　1950年代には多くのキューバ人音楽家がニューヨークへ移住し、そこでビッグ・バンドによるスウィング・ジャズ様式を取り入れ、「ラテン・ジャズ」として発展させた。このころ、ボーカル、パーカッション（ボンゴ、コンガ、クラベス、マラカス、ギロなどの打楽器）、ピアノ、ベース・ギター、トランペット、トロンボーン、サクソフォーンなど、十数人からなる編成が標準的となった。

　その後1960年代から1970年代にかけて、サルサを大きく発展させたのは、ニューヨークに住むプエルト・リコからの移住者たちだった。彼らは、自国の音楽の要素（ボンバbombaとよばれるリズムやクアトロcuatroという小型の10弦ギター）、およびジャズの要素（ハーモニーや即興的な独奏スタイル）を積極的に取り入れた。それによりサルサは、当時のプエルト・リコ人の文化的なシンボルになるとともに、ほかのラテン・アメリカ諸国（ベネズエラ、コロンビア、パナマなど）にも広がっていった。

　1980年代から1990年代にかけて、ラテン・バラードをサルサのリズムと融合させた新しいスタイル、サルサ・ロマンティカが生まれた。その特徴は、よりロマンティックな歌詞とゆっくりとしたテンポ、リズムよりもメロディの重視、コード変化の多用などにあり、官能的な踊りとも結び付いて多くのヒット曲が生まれた。

　1950年代から1990年代におけるサルサの代表的な演奏家と歌い手としては、ピアノ奏者エディ・パルミエリEddie Palmieri（1936―　）、パーカッション奏者のレイ・バレットRay Barretto（1929―2006）、ティト・プエンテ、サルサの歌姫セリア・クルーズCelia Cruz（1925―2003）、トロンボーン奏者・歌手のウィリー・コロンWillie Colón（1950―　）、ギター奏者・歌手のルベン・ブラデスRubén Blades（1948―　）、歌手のホセ・アルベルトJosé Alberto（1958―　）、ラロ・ロドリゲスLalo Rodríguez（1958―　）らがあげられる。
