Millipede - Millipede

Japanese: キシャヤスデ - きしゃやすで
Millipede - Millipede
A subspecies of the millipede of the family Polypedidae, order Polypedidae, class Diplopoda (illustration). It is so named because it occurs in large numbers once every few years in the mountainous areas of the Chubu region of Honshu, where it appears on the railway lines and disrupts train operations. The Obibaba millipede is about 3-3.5 cm long and has 20 body segments. It has no eyes. Its dorsal plate is reddish brown with dark horizontal stripes on each rear edge. Since the Koumi Line opened, there have been many instances of disruption by large swarms in the fall, but the Chuo Line and Hokuriku Line have also been affected. It is mainly found in the forest areas of central Honshu, where it mates and lays eggs in early summer.
