Baldensperger, F.

[Development of the French Positivism]
In the 20th century, comparative literature continued to develop rapidly, mainly in France. The three leading figures at the forefront of this field were Fernand Baldensperger (1871-1958), Paul Hazard (1878-1944), and Paul van Tieghem (1871-1948). Each of them contributed greatly to pioneering the field of research: Baldensperger's work Goethe in France (1904) examined how the author was received abroad; Hazard's work The Crisis of the European Spirit (1935) examined the various aspects of international exchange at one time across all cultural fields, including the arts, academia, and journalism; and van Tieghem's work Pre-Romanticism (1924-30) traced the history of the international development of a particular artistic movement. At that stage, the basic framework and methodology of comparative literature research up to the present day could be said to have been solidified, but in order to unify the extremely diverse and wide-ranging research fields and ensure the consistency and objectivity of the field as a discipline, the French school of comparative literature established one basic principle.
