"King and not king" - King and not king

...Their tragedies and comedies, which had a unique color and suited the tastes of the increasingly aristocratic audience, were extremely popular. Philaster (c. 1609) and The King and No King (1611) are their representative works, and in both cases the fusion of tragedy and comedy is achieved by building up the audience's tension to an extreme level through a series of thrilling scene effects, and then releasing the tension with a sudden reversal at the climax, giving the audience an artificial sense of relief. In tragedies such as The Maiden's Tragedy (c. 1611), the emphasis is on provocatively portraying the tragic figures of the characters who are forced to make a hopeless choice in a near-extreme situation.
