...In medieval European cities, people who suffered from leprosy were reported to the authorities, and after a strict examination, if they were diagnosed as lepers, they were stripped of their citizenship and sent to a leprosarium outside the city. These were also called lazaretto (a word derived from the beggar Lazarus, who was covered in boils all over his body, as seen in the Gospel of Luke 16:19-31. It also meant a beggar's camp, and later a quarantine station), and were established all over Europe after the 11th century, when leprosy began to spread.
