In 1948, Schaeffer, who was then an audio engineer at the French National Radio in Paris, began experimenting with this new field of music, which he named in 1949 and is sometimes translated as "concrete music." In other words, musique concrète uses some kind of "concrete sound" recorded on audio tape (initially on a recording disc) as its material, and creates musical works by mechanically and electrically manipulating and processing it. According to Schaeffer, traditional music achieves concrete expression by using abstract sounds (musical tones), but musique concrète tries to achieve abstract expression by using concrete sounds.
