...The fossils of annelids known from Japan are mainly trace fossils of tracks, burrows, and excretions, but also tube and body fossils. In recent years, many trace fossils have been reported (Kado Jiro, 1960-80) from the flysch facies of the Shimanto Belt (Cretaceous to Tertiary) in Shikoku. The trace fossil is that of the quiarchiate Nereites tosaensis of the polychaete (family Nereididae), which has a long and elongated shape that protrudes from the bottom of the strata. Some of the larger ones are about 17 mm wide, 6 mm high, and over 1.8 m long, and all of them have a vertical groove running down the center and numerous ribbon-like, slightly rounded, rectangular protrusions on both sides.
