Japanese: ジムグリ(地潜) - ジムグリ（英語表記）Elaphe conspicillata

A docile, non-venomous forest snake of the Colubridae family (illustration). Total length 80-120 cm. Found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and remote islands. The body scales have weak ridges, but are smooth and shiny overall. The dorsal surface of the body is reddish brown or yellowish brown, and the ventral surface is orange-red with a black checkered pattern, but the color shade and shape of the spots vary from individual to individual. The dorsal surface of young snakes is strongly reddish with many small black spots edged in yellow, but as they grow, the spots become less noticeable, and some individuals have no spots at all.

森林性のおとなしいナミヘビ科の無毒ヘビ（イラスト）。全長80～120cm。北海道，本州，四国，九州および離島に分布。体鱗に弱い隆条があるが全体に滑らかで光沢がある。体背面は赤褐色または黄褐色，腹面は橙がかった赤色で，黒色の市松模様が並ぶが，個体により色彩の濃淡や斑紋の形に変異がある。子ヘビの背面は赤みが強く，黄色く縁取られた黒色小斑紋が多数散在するが，成長とともに斑紋が目だたなくなり，まったく無斑の個体もある。
