Women's Temperance Union

Japanese: 婦人矯風会 - ふじんきょうふうかい

A Christian women's organization founded in 1893. Its official name is the Japan Christian Women's Temperance Union. It was established in 1886 as the Japan branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, a Christian women's organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio, USA in 1874, with the main goal of legalizing prohibition of alcohol. It was formed when the Tokyo Women's Temperance Union was established in 1886 as the Japan branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and similar organizations in Kobe and Okayama merged. It has continued to this day while carrying a long history of women's movements, including prohibition of alcohol, smoking bans, abolition of public prostitution, promotion of monogamy, the women's suffrage movement, the peace movement, and anti-prostitution laws.

1893年に発足したキリスト教の女性団体。正式名称は日本キリスト教婦人矯風会。1874年アメリカ合衆国オハイオ州クリーブランドに設立された，主として禁酒の法制化を目的とするキリスト教の女性団体，キリスト教婦人矯風会 Women's Christian Temperance Unionの日本支部として 1886年設けられた東京婦人矯風会と，神戸，岡山にあった同様な団体とが合併して成立。禁酒，禁煙，公娼廃止，一夫一婦制促進，女性参政権運動，平和運動，売春禁止法など女性運動の長い歴史を担いながら今日にいたっている。
