A Christian women's organization founded in 1893. Its official name is the Japan Christian Women's Temperance Union. It was established in 1886 as the Japan branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, a Christian women's organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio, USA in 1874, with the main goal of legalizing prohibition of alcohol. It was formed when the Tokyo Women's Temperance Union was established in 1886 as the Japan branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and similar organizations in Kobe and Okayama merged. It has continued to this day while carrying a long history of women's movements, including prohibition of alcohol, smoking bans, abolition of public prostitution, promotion of monogamy, the women's suffrage movement, the peace movement, and anti-prostitution laws.
