Sligo (English spelling)

Japanese: スライゴ（英語表記）Sligo

It is the capital of the county of the same name, located in the northwest of Ireland facing the Atlantic Ocean. The name comes from the Irish word meaning "river full of shellfish." Population 18,002 (1981). It is a major port on the west coast along with Limerick and Galway, and prospered through grain exports and sugar imports, but the population continued to decline after the potato famine. It began to show a growing trend again from the 1981 census, when it was designated as a target area for the government's 20-year industrial development plan, and new factories were built and foreign companies were invited to set up shop.

アイルランド北西部の大西洋に臨む同名県の県都。地名は〈貝の多い川〉という意味のアイルランド語に由来する。人口1万8002(1981)。リメリック，ゴールウェーと並ぶ西海岸の主要港で，穀物輸出，砂糖輸入で栄えたが，ジャガイモ飢饉以後人口は減少を続けた。再び増加傾向を示しはじめたのは1981年国勢調査からで，政府の工業振興20ヵ年計画の対象地域に指定され，工場新設，外国企業の誘致などが積極的に行われたためである。
