A city in the Razgrad Oblast in northeastern Bulgaria. It is a river port city on the Danube River, bordering southeastern Romania. It is one of the centers of the fertile agricultural region of South Dobruja, and has factories producing machinery, canned goods, alcohol, dairy products, meat, edible oil, textiles, ceramics, furniture, household goods, and organic chemicals. Founded as the Roman city of Durostum in the 1st century, it was the political and economic center of the First Bulgarian Empire from the early days. In the 8th to 10th centuries, it was called Dolastar, and was the seat of the Bulgarian Patriarchate under Emperors Simeon (r. 893-927) and Peter I (r. 927-69). After 1388, it was occupied by the Ottoman Empire and became a fortress and market town. It became part of Bulgaria in 1878, and Romania in 1913 under the Treaty of Bucharest, but it returned to Bulgaria in 1940. Population: 56,229 (1991 estimate). ブルガリア北東部,ラズグラド州の都市。ドナウ川にのぞむ河港都市でルーマニア東南部と境を接する。南ドブルジャの肥沃な農業地帯の一中心地で,機械,缶詰,酒造,乳製品,食肉,食用油,繊維,陶器,家具,日用品,有機化学などの工場をもつ。1世紀にローマの都市ドゥロストルムとして建設され,第1次ブルガリア帝国の初期から政治,経済の中心であった。8~10世紀にはドラスタルと呼ばれ,シメオン皇帝 (在位 893~927) およびペタル1世 (在位 927~69) の治世下にブルガリア総主教座がおかれたが,1388年以後オスマン帝国に占領され,その要塞町,市場町となった。 1878年にブルガリア領となり,1913年ブカレスト条約でルーマニア領となったが,40年ブルガリア領に戻った。人口5万 6229 (1991推計) 。
