Arezzo is the capital of the Province of Arezzo in Tuscany, central Italy. It is located about 65 km southeast of Florence, on the fertile plains of eastern Tuscany where the Chiana River joins the Arno River. It is a key road transport hub with a highway connecting Rome and Florence, and is a center of agricultural trade and commerce. It exports goldwork. It also has a developed furniture and food industry. An important city of ancient Etruscan origin, called Aretium by the Romans, it was a base of operations for Rome in northern Italy in the 3rd century BC. It produced excellent archaic bronze statues such as the Chimera, and was also known for Aretean pottery (red pottery). It flourished in the Middle Ages, and after passing through Florence it became part of Tuscany. It was briefly under French rule in the 19th century, but became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. The city is almost completely surrounded by a wall. The nearby Piazza Grande was once the city center, and around the square there are many palaces and buildings dating back to the 14th century. Construction of the Gothic cathedral began in 1286 and was completed in 1914. The city was heavily damaged during World War II. It is the birthplace of the Renaissance poet F. Petrarch. Population: 90,577 (1991 estimate). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
