He moved to London with his father, a cabinet maker, around 1727, and in 1749 he opened his own shop. In 1754 he published a collection of furniture illustrations, Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director. His style was characterized by a free and sophisticated style that was based on Rococo tastes, but also skillfully incorporated styles from various eras and regions, such as Gothic, Chinese, and Classical. His works not only created the golden age of British furniture, but also had a major influence on European furniture of the time. He is particularly famous for his chairs with their intricate openwork patterns.
