Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 1081-1118. A military and statesman from the Komnenos family, a powerful family in Asia Minor. He overthrew Nikephoros III by force and established the Komnenos dynasty (1081-1185). He overthrew the Norman invasion, the capture of the Pecheneg capital, and the passage of the First Crusade through the country with clever political strategies. He avoided the Normans by receiving military aid from Venice in exchange for customs privileges, and by receiving military aid from the Cumans against the Pechenegs. He partially fulfilled the promise of the Crusader knights to return the former Byzantine territories in Asia Minor.

ビザンティン皇帝。在位1081‐1118年。小アジアの大豪族コムネノス家出身の軍人政治家。ニケフォロス3世を武力で倒し，コムネノス朝(1081‐1185)を開く。ノルマン軍の来襲，ペチェネグ族の首都攻略および第1回十字軍の国内通過をいずれも巧妙な政略で乗り切った。ノルマンに対しては関税特権と引換えにベネチアの軍事援助を，ペチェネグ族に対してはクマン族の軍事援助を得て事なきをえた。十字軍の騎士たちからは小アジアの旧ビザンティン領返還の約束を部分的に実現させた。
