Autism - Jihei (English spelling) autism

Japanese: 自閉 - じへい（英語表記）autism

This refers to a state in which a person rejects or ignores external stimuli, or in some cases only shows apologetic reactions, and retreats into their own life. This term was proposed by Swiss psychopathologist Eugene Bleuler (1857-1939). It is related to temperament, and even normal people can show this tendency, but it is often more pronounced in people with schizoid temperament or schizophrenia. Some scholars have also pointed out that, as in the case of autistic children, the environment acts on underlying temperament to cause the autistic phenomenon. In the narrow sense, the term is used to refer to infantile autism.

外界の刺激を拒否したり，無視しようとしたり，ある場合は申しわけ程度の反応を示すだけで，自分だけの生活に沈潜する状態をいう。スイスの精神病理学者のユージン・ブロイラー (1857～1939) が提唱したもの。気質に関係があり，正常な人でもその傾向を示すことがあり，分裂性気質や統合失調症の人の場合には，顕著に認められることが多い。また自閉児のように，環境が潜在している気質に働いて自閉現象を起こすことを，一部の学者は指摘している。狭義には幼児自閉症をさすことばとして用いられる。
