[Origin of Indian Theatre]
According to legend, the sage Bharata, at the command of Brahma, created drama for the gods and introduced it to the human world. The oldest and most authoritative Indian treatise on drama is named after Bharata, called Bharatīya Nāṭya‐śāstra, and is said to have adapted the heavenly theatrical techniques to suit the human world. However, apart from this legendary origin, there is no solid evidence of the historical origin of Indian drama.

…A treatise on the theatre of Indian classical drama written in Sanskrit. It is said to have been written by the sage Bharata, and is therefore usually called the Bharatiya Nāṭya-śāstra (Bharata's Theatre). The date of its creation is unknown, but it is thought to have been written around the 3rd century.
