1902‐68 Thai politician. In addition to being prime minister four times, he also served as minister of transport. His father was a member of the royal family and a provincial governor. He studied in France at his own expense at the age of 15. After returning to Japan in 1927, he worked at the Post and Telegraph Bureau. While in France, he joined a secret society formed by fellow students to overthrow the absolute monarchy, and during the constitutional revolution of 1932, he was responsible for sabotaging communications facilities. As soon as he became the fourth prime minister in August 1944 during World War II, he pretended to cooperate with the Japanese military, with which Thailand was allied, but secretly teamed up with the anti-Japanese underground group Free Thailand, and cooperated with the Allied forces, leading to a favorable international status for Thailand after the war.
