[Died] August 16, 1951. Paris. French director and actor. After studying medicine in Paris, he appeared in The Brothers Karamazov directed by J. Copeau in 1910, and in 1913 he joined the Théâtre des Vieux-Colombiers as a stage director. After touring America during World War I, he was recognized as an actor there as well. He then moved to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and became independent, achieving great success with plays such as Knokke and Jean de la Lune. He formed a friendship with Giraudoux at the premiere of Siegfried in 1928, and even after moving to the Théâtre de l'Athénée in 1934, he mainly performed Giraudoux's plays. He also gave some great performances in films such as Hotel du Nord and At the End of the Road, and in his later years he also worked on works by Genet and Sartre.

フランスの演出家，俳優。パリで薬学を学んだのち，1910年に J.コポー演出の『カラマーゾフの兄弟』に出演，13年ビュー＝コロンビエ座に舞台監督として参加，第1次世界大戦中のアメリカ巡業後，同座で俳優としても認められた。その後コメディ・デ・シャンゼリゼ座に移って独立し，『クノック』『お月様のジャン』などで大当りをとる。 28年『ジークフリート』の初演によってジロドゥと親交を結び，34年アテネ座に移ってからも主としてジロドゥ劇を上演。『北ホテル』『旅路の果て』など映画でも名演を残し，晩年にはジュネやサルトルの作品も手がけた。
