Toshiki Sano - Toshiki Sano

Architect and authority on earthquake-resistant construction. Born on April 11, 1880 in Arato-cho (now Shirataka-cho), Nishiokitama-gun, Yamagata Prefecture. After graduating from the Second High School, he graduated from the Department of Architecture at the College of Technology, Tokyo Imperial University in 1903 (Meiji 36), where he studied steel and concrete construction. He further developed earthquake-resistant construction, publishing "Theory of Earthquake-Resistant Construction of Houses" in 1915 (Taisho 4), and at the same time began researching fire- and wind-resistant disaster prevention architecture. In 1918, he became a professor at Tokyo Imperial University, and participated in the Imperial Capital Reconstruction Plan after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, serving concurrently as Director of the Architecture Bureau of the Reconstruction Agency, and supervised the land readjustment project. He also served as President of the Architectural Institute of Japan. In addition to designing the first steel-framed building, Maruzen Bookstore in Nihonbashi, Tokyo (1909), he also made a great contribution to the education and administrative worlds. He passed away on December 5, 1956.

建築家、耐震構造学の権威。明治13年4月11日、山形県西置賜(にしおきたま)郡荒砥(あらと)町(現、白鷹(しらたか)町)に生まれる。第二高等学校を経て1903年(明治36)東京帝国大学工科大学建築学科を卒業、鉄骨およびコンクリート構造学を研究した。さらに耐震構造学を開拓し、1915年(大正4)「家屋耐震構造論」を発表、同時に耐火・耐風などの防災建築研究を開始した。1918年東京帝国大学教授となり、1923年の関東大震災の帝都復興計画には復興院建築局長を兼任して参画、区画整理事業を指導した。日本建築学会会長も務めた。最初の鉄骨構造建築である東京・日本橋の丸善書店の設計(1909)のほか、広く教育界、行政界でも高い功績を残している。昭和31年12月5日没。
