Norepinephrine, also known as arterenol, is a type of catecholamine secreted from the adrenal medulla, chromaffin cells, and sympathetic nerve cells, and acts as a neurotransmitter in the body. It is also a precursor of the adrenal medulla hormone adrenaline. It is found in greater amounts in the myocardium, testes, and ovaries than adrenaline. It increases free fatty acids in the blood, as well as increasing blood pressure and stimulating the central nervous system. It is used clinically as a hypertensive agent.

ノルエピネフリン，あるいはアルテレノールともいう。副腎髄質，クロム親和細胞および交感神経細胞から分泌されて，生体内で神経刺激伝達物質として働いているカテコールアミンの一種。副腎髄質ホルモンであるアドレナリンの前駆質でもある。心筋，睾丸および卵巣ではアドレナリンより多く存在する。血中遊離脂肪酸を上昇させるほか，血圧上昇，中枢神経系の刺激などの作用をする。昇圧剤として臨床面で応用されている。
