Abbreviation of Global Positioning System. In Japanese, it is called "Global Positioning System". It receives signals (time, orbit information) from multiple GPS satellites in orbit around the earth, calculates the time difference and the speed of arrival of the radio waves, and determines the distance from the satellite, and based on that, determines the latitude and longitude. Originally launched by the United States for military purposes, it is also used for some civilian purposes. It is generally known for its use in car navigation systems, but it is also used in cameras, such as "LAND MASTER", a film camera with a built-in GPS receiver, released in 1996 (Heisei 8), which exposed the position and direction as text information on the film. Since then, there has been little progress in the combination of GPS and cameras, but GPS is attracting attention again due to the digitalization of cameras and the spread of online map services such as Google Maps. Sony was one of the first to commercialize a personal GPS receiver, and the compact digital camera Nikon COOLPIX P6000 (photo on the right), announced on August 7, 2008, is equipped with a GPS unit and can add location information at the time of shooting to the image.
