A state in the southeast of Australia. It has an area of 801,600 km2 and a population of 6.17 million (1996). Its capital is Sydney. Annual precipitation decreases from the coast (over 1,000 mm) to the inland northwest (under 200 mm). Land use also changes from intensive dairy and horticulture on the coast to intensive sheep farming in the eastern highlands, wheat and sheep areas from the western slopes of the eastern highlands to the inland plains, and then extensive sheep farming inland. The majority of the population is concentrated on the coast, especially in the three major metropolitan areas of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.
