Tamonyama Castle

Japanese: 多聞山城 - たもんやまじょう

Hirayama Castle was located in Tamon-cho , Nara City, Nara Prefecture. It was a castle built in the Sengoku period, and is the origin of the name "Tamon Yagura ". It was Matsunaga Hisahide 's castle. It was built on Bimanjiyama in 1560 (Eiroku 3) by Matsunaga Hisahide, a representative figure of the Gekokujo movement. This place was a strategic point that controlled Nara and also led to Kyoto and Sakai. Hisahide was a vassal of Miyoshi Nagayoshi, and when the Miyoshi clan surpassed their master, the Hosokawa clan, and began to dominate the Kinai region, Hisahide also began to exert his influence throughout Yamato. In 1567 ( Eiroku 10), Tsutsui Junkei united with the Miyoshi Trio, who had fallen out of favor with Hisahide, and attacked Tamonyama Castle, but Hisahide repelled them. In 1571 (Genki 2), they raised the flag of rebellion against Oda Nobunaga, and the following year Tamonyama Castle was surrounded by the forces of Tsutsui Junkei, but a peace agreement was made and no further conflict ensued. When conflict broke out between Nobunaga and Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki, they sided with Ashikaga and again raised the flag of rebellion against Nobunaga, and in 1573 (Tensho 1), Nobunaga attacked Tamonyama Castle and it fell. Akechi Mitsuhide, Sakuma Nobumori, and others entered the castle, but Nobunaga then ordered Tsutsui Junkei to destroy it. Tamonyama Castle was a magnificent and splendid castle, and it is said that Nobunaga used it as a reference for the construction of Azuchi Castle. Currently, the site of Tamonyama Castle is the grounds of the municipal Wakakusa Junior High School, and a stone monument reading "Tamonyama Castle Ruins" stands just inside the main gate. Take a bus from JR Nara Line Nara Station or Kintetsu Nara Line Kintetsu Nara Station, get off at Tegai-cho, and walk for 13 minutes.

奈良県奈良市多門町にあった平山城(ひらやまじろ)。戦国時代の城郭建築で、「多聞櫓(たもんやぐら)」の名の由来になった城。松永久秀(ひさひで)の居城。1560年（永禄3）下克上(げこくじょう)を代表する人物、松永久秀によって眉間寺山に築かれた。この地は、奈良を制圧するとともに、京都や堺へも通じる要衝であった。久秀は三好長慶(ながよし)の家臣で、三好氏が主家の細川氏をしのいで畿内を支配するようになると、久秀も大和一円に勢力を張るようになった。1567年（永禄10）筒井順慶(じゅんけい)は久秀と不仲になった三好三人衆と結束して多聞山城を攻めたが、久秀はこれを撃退した。1571年（元亀2）織田信長に反旗をひるがえし、翌年多聞山城は筒井順慶軍の包囲を受けたが、和睦し争乱にはいたらなかった。信長と将軍足利義昭との抗争が起こると足利方について再び信長に反旗を翻し、1573年（天正1）信長に攻められ、多聞山城は落城した。多聞山城には明智光秀、佐久間信盛(のぶもり)らが入ったが、その後信長は筒井順慶に多聞山城の破却を命じた。多聞山城は壮大・華麗な城郭で、信長が安土城築城の参考にしたとも伝えられている。現在、多聞山城跡は市立若草中学校の敷地となっており、正門を入ったところに「多聞山城跡」の石碑が建っている。JR奈良線奈良駅または近鉄奈良線近鉄奈良駅からバス、手貝町下車、徒歩13分。
