(3) It is said in the Naniwa Monsho that “in Edo, the word ‘toiya’ (wholesaler) is pronounced as ‘ton’ya’,” and in the early modern period, the word was said differently in the east and west.

(2)遠国との取引きが多いものは松前問屋、土佐問屋のように地名を冠して呼ばれ、専業的で近国との取引きが多いものは油問屋など品名を冠して呼ばれる傾向があった。
(3)「問屋(トイヤ) 江戸でとんやといふはなまり也」〔浪花聞書〕とあり、近世期は東西で異なった言い方をしていた。

とん‐や【問屋】

〘名〙① 「といや(問屋)」の変化した語。※随筆・皇都午睡(1850)三「江戸にて問屋(といや)を問屋(トンヤ)と云」② ある事柄を、一手に引き受けてでもいるような人。そのことを専門としている人。※滑稽本・浮世風呂(1809‐13)四「おめへは虚誕(うそつき)の問屋(トンヤ)だから、的(あて)にならねへ」
