For real number α ≠ 0 and integer n ≧ 0, we define (when α is a natural number N greater than or equal to n , then is the number of combinations, _N C _n ). In this case, the Taylor expansion of the function f ( x ) = (1 + x ) ^α centered at x = 0 is as follows. However, the series on the right-hand side generally converges for -1 < x < 1, and if α > 0, it converges for -1 ≦ x ≦ 1, and if -1 < α < 0, it converges for -1 < x ≦ 1. In particular, if α is a natural number, then it can be seen from (1) that the term n > α on the right-hand side of (2) will be 0, so (2) holds for all real numbers x , and this is the usual binomial theorem.
