Refers to tenant farmers in southern Vietnam during the French colonial period. Meaning "rented fields." The international price of rice, which skyrocketed from the mid-19th century, led to the rapid development of rice cultivation in the Mekong Delta, which became French territory under the Treaty of Saigon. Since 1862, the French government has created vast amounts of uncultivable land by establishing land registration laws and digging canals, which it has given out (concessions) to the French and wealthy Vietnamese free of charge. This resulted in the establishment of a typical large landlord system. The landlords rented out land to tenant farmers, taking paddy, which accounts for 40-70% of the harvest, as rent, while lending out buffaloes, seeds, farm tools, etc., and collecting rent.
