Areca palm (English spelling) Chrysalidocarpus lutescens; areca palm; butterfly palm
It is a palm plant native to Madagascar. It was once classified as a member of the Areca genus, and so is known as Areca palm, but in modern classification it is included in the Chrysalidocarpus genus. Its pinnate leaves resemble the feathers of a pheasant, hence its Japanese name Yamadori palm. The trunk grows in a clump, reaching a diameter of 5-15 cm and a height of 7-8 m. Leaf scars that look like bamboo joints remain on the trunk at intervals of about 10 cm. The leaves are pinnate and about 2 m long. 40-50 pairs of leaflets are arranged on the leaf axis, and they bend gracefully. It is often cultivated as a garden tree in the tropics and subtropics. In Japan, it is cultivated in greenhouses, and is sold as a foliage plant in pots with a height of about 40 cm to about 2 m. It is also produced as cut leaves for ikebana. It is relatively shade-tolerant and easy to grow indoors. When the surface of the potting soil dries, give it plenty of water and keep the temperature at least 5°C or higher.
