…During the Second Empire, the Orléanist faction split up, with some supporting the empire, but the leadership refused to cooperate with Napoleon III. When the Second Empire collapsed in September 1870, the Orléanist faction tried to put Louis-Philippe Albert d'Orléans, comte de Paris (1838-94), grandson of Louis-Philippe, on the throne, but the center-left faction supported the Republic along with Thiers, while the center-right faction also abandoned their plan to restore the monarchy by uniting the two royalists in 1873, when Henri V de Bourbon, comte de Chambord (1820-83), a member of the legitimate dynasty, insisted on using the white flag of the legitimate dynasty as the national flag. After this, the Orléanist faction lost its influence in parliament and declined as an independent political party. …
