[Classification and distribution]
Botanically, several species are cultivated. Important ones include the Japanese mulberry, which grows wild in Japan, and the introduced species, such as the Japanese mulberry, the Japanese rose, the Japanese black mulberry, and the Japanese red mulberry. Japanese mulberry M. bombycis Koidz. (illustration) is also called simply "mule" or "noguwa" and is one of the parent species of the mulberry widely cultivated in Japan for silkworm farming. It is a dioecious deciduous tree that grows to a height of about 10 meters in the wild.
