Indigenous people living in the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Peninsula, and the Commander Islands in eastern Russia. Their language is related to Eskimo, and their physique is Mongoloid. They have become increasingly Americanized, and today most speak English. They are marine mammal hunters who live on the coast and make a living by hunting sea lions and sea otters. They marry wives from neighboring villages, but they remain in their home until the birth of their children. Polygamy and polyandry are permitted. Culturally, they are a mix of Eskimos, American Indians living on the northwest coast, and peoples of far north Asia; for example, their kayaks incorporate elements of both Indian canoes and Eskimo kayaks.
