It refers to the group of foreign artists who settled and produced works in Paris, and although there were such groups in each era, the term is used to refer to (1) the 13th century school of painters who produced illuminated manuscripts under the patronage of King Saint Louis, (2) the painters from around World War I to before World War II, and (3) the foreign painters who mainly tended to abstraction after World War II. However, it is usually used to refer to the foreign painters who produced works in Paris, especially in Montmartre and Montparnasse, between the two world wars.
