An insect of the Lepidoptera, Sphingidae family. Wings span about 10cm. The forewings are grayish white with scattered black scales. There are three black horizontal bands, all of which taper and fade from the leading edge. The two vertical lines and the black line from the apex are dark. The hind wings are velvety black with whitish areas near the hind horns. When mature, the larvae reach a body length of about 8cm, with a blue-green background and white lines on each abdominal segment, and the apex, a projection of the eighth segment called the caudal horn, is about 1.2cm long and densely covered with small cone-shaped projections. In addition to the green type, there are also brown and intermediate types of larvae.

鱗翅目スズメガ科の昆虫。翅の開張10cm内外。前翅に灰白色，黒鱗を散布する。黒色の横帯が3本あるが，いずれも前縁部からしだいに細まり，薄くなる。2本の縦線と翅頂から出る黒線は濃い。後翅はビロード状に黒く，後角近くが白っぽい。幼虫は老熟すると体長8cm内外に達し，青緑色の地に腹部の各環節には白線があり，尾角（びかく）という第8節の突起は1.2cm内外，円錐形の小突起を密生している。幼虫の中には緑色型のほか褐色型や中間型もある。
