This is a large group of fungi that includes everything from single-celled organisms such as yeast, to molds with filamentous cells such as Aspergillus oryzae, Penicillium oryzae, and Neurospora crassa, as well as relatively large, mushroom-like organisms such as Trichoderma maculatum, Trichoderma maculatum, and Morel. There are currently 1,950 genera and 15,000 species known. Like other fungi, they undergo repeated alternations of asexual and sexual reproduction, but the characteristic of ascomycete fungi is that as a result of sexual reproduction they form a pouch called an ascus, in which they usually produce eight spores (ascospores).
