Barabbas - Bar-abba (Aramaic)

Date of birth and death unknown. A Jew who was arrested in Jerusalem by the Roman governor Pilate at the same time as Jesus, probably for rebelling against Rome. The New Testament tells us that at the time, it was customary for the Roman governor to pardon one prisoner nominated by the Jews during the Passover festival, but when Pilate urged the people to choose between Jesus and Barabbas, the people demanded the release of Barabbas and cried out for Jesus to be crucified. There is no record of this outside the New Testament.

生没年不詳。イエスと同時期に、おそらくローマに対する反抗運動をしたために、エルサレムでローマ総督ピラトによって捕らえられていたユダヤ人。『新約聖書』は、当時ローマ総督は過越(すぎこし)祭に際しユダヤ人の指名する囚人1人に恩赦を与える習慣であったが、ピラトが民衆にイエスかバラバか、いずれかを選ぶよう促したところ、民衆はバラバの釈放を求め、イエスを十字架につけよと叫んだ、と伝えている。『新約聖書』以外には記録はない。
