Radiation sterilization of medical equipment is a process that is currently in widespread use worldwide. In recent years, many disposable plastic medical equipment that is sensitive to heat has come into use, and a process is being used to sterilize these by irradiating them with 2 to 3 Mrad of gamma rays from cobalt-60. Traditionally, gas sterilization using ethylene oxide was used, but this method is problematic in terms of ease of operation and adverse effects caused by residual adsorption of gas. In response to these problems, radiation sterilization is gradually replacing this method, as it allows products to be easily sterilized after packaging and can be applied to objects that are structurally difficult to sterilize with gas.
