Year of death: 1868.6.10 (Meiji 1, leap year 4, 20) Year of birth: Tempo 6.7.14 (1835.8.8) A patriot of the Choshu (Hagi) clan at the end of the Edo period. Born in Mukuno Village, Oshima County, Suo Province (Kuga Town, Yamaguchi Prefecture) as the son of village headman Nakaji Hachiroemon. He was initially adopted by Kitani Ryozo, a retainer of Ura Tsunetake, a senior vassal of the Choshu clan, and later succeeded the Sera clan. He studied under Gekkei, and then traveled to Edo to study. He was gifted, courageous, and noble. He joined the Kiheitai as a secretary, and in 1865 (Keio 1) he was made military inspector when the Second Kiheitai was organized. The following year, he fought at Oshimaguchi in the Bakufu-Choshu War. In March 1868 (Meiji 1), he became a staff officer at the Oshu Pacification General Government Office, and advocated a hard-line approach ordering the Sendai clan to attack the Aizu clan. While he was staying in Fukushima, he received an emissary from the Sendai clan requesting lenient treatment of the Aizu clan, but he refused. He was hated, captured at an inn, and killed with a sword.
