A city facing the Pacific Ocean in southern Chiba Prefecture. Established as a city in 1958. Most of the city is mountainous, with the Isumi River flowing north and the Sotobo Line running along the coast. The central Katsuura district developed as a fishing town and market town, and the city is the second largest offshore fishing port in the prefecture after Choshi Port in terms of landings of tuna, bonito and other fish, and is also thriving in seafood processing. The morning market has a tradition dating back to early modern times. Okitsu in the south, which was an anchorage for the East China Sea shipping line, is now known as a swimming beach. The coastal area is designated as Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park, and includes the cliffs of Osen Koroshi, Moriya Cave, Ubara Utopia, and Underwater Park. 千葉県南部,太平洋に面する市。1958年市制。大部分は山地で夷隅(いすみ)川が北流,海岸に外房線が通じる。中心の勝浦地区は漁師町,市場町として発達,マグロ,カツオなどの沖合漁業で銚子港に次ぐ県第2位の水揚げがあり水産加工も盛ん。朝市は近世以来の伝統をもつ。東廻海運の停泊地であった南部の興津は現在は海水浴場として知られる。海岸一帯は南房総国定公園に指定され,絶壁の続く〈おせんころがし〉,守谷洞穴,鵜原理想郷,海中公園などがある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。93.96km2。2万788人(2010)。
