Dictionary - Dictionary

It mainly refers to a book that collects words that represent things or events and arranges them in a certain order to explain them. In contrast, a dictionary is a book that arranges words and characters from a certain perspective, such as in alphabetical order, by the number of strokes in kanji, or alphabetical order, and records their readings and meanings. The term encyclopedia was first used in Japan in 1931 (Showa 6), when Shimonaka Yasaburo, the owner of Heibonsha, announced his plan for an encyclopedia, named it "The Great Encyclopedia," and declared that it was different from a "dictionary."

物や事柄を表す語を集めて一定の順序に並べて説明した書物をおもにいう。これに対して、ことばや文字をある視点から、たとえば五十音順、漢字の画数順やアルファベット順などに配列して、その読み方や意味などを記した書物を辞典といっている。わが国で事典という名称が使用されたのは、1931年（昭和6）平凡社の社主下中弥三郎(しもなかやさぶろう)が百科事典の計画を発表、『大百科事典』と命名して、「辞典」とは別種であることを宣言したのが最初である。
