An old town in Kitatsuru County, on the eastern edge of Yamanashi Prefecture. Located on the river terrace of the Katsura River, Uenohara is centrally located, with the Chuo Main Line and the Chuo Expressway passing through it, and developed as a post town on the Koshu Highway. It is also the center of the weaving industry in the county, and is famous for its silk and rayon textiles (Kai silk). The machinery and metals industry is thriving. In February 2005, it merged with Akiyama Village in Minamitsuru County to become a city, Uenohara City. Area: 125.51 km2 . Population: 26,835 (2003). 山梨県東端,北都留(きたつる)郡の旧町。桂川の河岸段丘上にあり,中央本線,中央自動車道が通じる中心の上野原は甲州道中の宿場町として発達,郡内機業地の一中心で絹・人絹織物(甲斐絹(かいき))が有名。機械金属産業が盛ん。2005年2月南都留郡秋山村と合併し市制,上野原市となる。125.51km2。2万6835人(2003)。
