Satsuo Yamamoto

Japanese:
Satsuo Yamamoto

Film director. Born in Kagoshima City. Due to left-wing activism, he dropped out of the German department at Waseda University after one year. In 1933 (Showa 8), he joined Shochiku Kamata. He worked as an assistant director to Naruse Mikio, and when Naruse transferred to PCL (the predecessor to Toho), he joined. He was promoted to director in 1937 and attracted attention with "Hot Wind" (1943), but his real career began after World War II, when he left Toho in the midst of a dispute and went freelance. He demonstrated his talent in message-filled films such as "City of Violence" (1950), which was at the forefront of the independent production movement of the 1950s, "Vacuum Zone" (1952), a scathing indictment of the Imperial Army, "Song of the Cart" (1959), a tale of a farm woman's life, and "The Witness's Chair" (1965), a criticism of court cases, and solidified his position as a left-wing social writer. On the other hand, in works such as "The White Tower" (1966), "The Magnificent Clan" (1974), "The Annular Eclipse" (1975), and "The Barren Zone" (1976), he also demonstrated his talent for entertaining films by using melodramatic techniques to depict the behind-the-scenes dramas of the medical, political, and financial worlds. This duality can also be seen in his period dramas "The Shinobi no Mono" (1962), the "War and Humanity" trilogy (1970-1973), and "Ah, Nomugi Pass" (1979). His final work was "Ah, Nomugi Pass: New Green Chapter" (1982).
