This refers to buttocks that protrude significantly backwards due to the accumulation of a large amount of fatty tissue inside. Fatty buttocks are well known to be prominent in adult women of the Khoisan people who live in the region centered around the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa, and are considered a racial characteristic. They are also seen in Onge women who live in the Andaman Islands. Because the fatty tissue has well-developed fibers, the buttocks do not sag as a whole. It is said that when the fat is well-developed, a child carried on the back can stand on the buttocks. The storage of a large amount of fat in one place can be interpreted as one form of adaptation to the dry, hot, and inhospitable land, like a camel's hump. Incidentally, Late Paleolithic female figurines (called Venus) excavated from various parts of Eurasia are carved to have large buttocks, and when they were discovered at the end of the 19th century, they were thought to be associated with humans having fat buttocks. However, female figurines came to be seen as an expression of desires such as a wish for fertility, and the idea that humans with fat buttocks existed in Eurasia has now been rejected.
