Kiyouji Hosokawa

Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. Military commander during the Northern and Southern Court period. Son of Kazuuji. Originally named Motouji, commonly known as Yahachi. He achieved success by following Ashikaga Takauji, and played an active role as a powerful military commander during the Kan'o Disturbance. In 1353 (Bunwa 2/Shohei 8), when the Southern Court forces led by Yamana Tokiuji invaded Kyoto, he served as the rear guard for Ashikaga Yoshiakira, and carrying Emperor Go-Kogon on his back over his armor as he fled across the mountains to Omi and Mino. The following year he became the Wakasa Shugo, and was highly valued within the shogunate as an Intsuke no Tojin (chief retainer). In 1354 (Bunwa 4/Shohei 10), he attacked Ashikaga Tadafuyu and recaptured Kyoto. In 1359 (Enbun 2/Shohei 12), he requested to become the Shugo of Echizen, but Takauji refused, and he fled to Awa. When Takauji died the following year, he became Yoshiakira's steward and wielded great influence. However, his strong desire for power and his aggressive policy of expanding the provinces, such as expelling the powerful military commander Niki Yoshinaga, drew the resentment of other generals, and in the 16th year of the Shohei era (1566), he was slandered by Sasaki Takauji (Doyo) for cursing Yoshiakira, leading to his downfall. He then defected to the Southern Court and attempted to make a comeback in Shikoku, but was killed in battle at Sanuki Shiramine Castle (Sakai City, Kagawa Prefecture) with his cousin Yoriyuki. <References> Ogawa Makoto, "Hosokawa Yoriyuki"

南北朝時代の武将。和氏の子。初名元氏,通称弥八。足利尊氏に従って軍功を重ね,観応の擾乱では有力武将として活躍。文和2/正平8(1353)年,山名時氏ら南朝軍の京都進攻の際には足利義詮方の殿軍を務め,後光厳天皇を鎧の上から背負って山を越え,近江・美濃へ逃れた。翌年若狭守護となり,幕府内でも引付頭人として重用される。文和4/正平10年,足利直冬を攻めて京都を奪回。延文2/正平12年,越前守護を望むが,尊氏に拒否され阿波に出奔。翌年尊氏が死去すると,義詮の執事となって権勢を振るった。しかし有力武将仁木義長を追放するなど,その旺盛な権勢欲と強引な分国拡張策は諸将の反感を招き,康安1/正平16年,義詮を呪詛したとの佐々木高氏(導誉)の讒言にあい失脚した。以後南朝に走り四国で再挙を図ったが,従兄弟の頼之と讃岐白峰城(香川県坂出市)に戦い討死した。<参考文献>小川信『細川頼之』
